Team Canada and Team Wales elite boxing teams in Regina for seven day training camp

Team Canada’s and Team Wales’ elite men’s and women’s national boxing teams are in Regina for a rigorous, seven day training camp in preparation for the Glasgow 2014 XX Commonwealth Games, and days before the 21nd annual Ken Goff Memorial Boxing Classic. Team Canada will compete against Team Wales on Friday, May 23, at 8 p.m. at the Credit Union EventPlex, and in the Mayor’s Cup, Sunday, May 25, at Banner Hall at Evraz Place at 1 p.m.


Team Canada’s elite men’s team is competitively positioned with three International Boxing Association (AIBA) World Boxing Championships contenders, Olympian Custio Clayton (69 kg), Brody Blair (81kg), and Samir El Mais (91 kg), and Arthur Biyarslanov (64 kg) who ranked 16th globally at the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in 2012.


This will be the first Commonwealth Games in history to include a women’s boxing program so this is the first training camp in Boxing Canada’s history to include the men’s and women’s elite national teams. Team Canada’s elite women’s national team includes eight-time Canadian Champion, XVI Pan American Games (Guadalajara 2011) gold medalist, and four-time Ringside Women’s World Champion, Mandy Bujold (51 kg). Ariane Fortin (75 kg) is a two-time Ringside Women’s World Champion.


“Our team is excited to be in Regina taking part in a training camp and dual match as we prepare for the Commonwealth Games,” said Mandy Bujold. “This week's events will be a great test for our team as Wales has a strong team and most of their team will also compete at the Commonwealth Games this summer. We are looking forward to continuing to work with Wales throughout the rest of the training camp leading into the bouts on Friday and Sunday.”


The boxers have been using the Regina Boxing Club (RBC) as a training centre in preparation for their bouts, along with access to Black and Blue Boxing Club and Lonsdale Boxing Club in Regina. The RBC has been a centre of excellence in amateur boxing, developing athletes into competitors, champions, and good citizens since 1949. The Ken Goff Memorial Boxing Classic in an annual international boxing competition and event fundraiser for the Regina Boxing Club, which was founded by Ken Goff.


Mayor’s Cup tickets are still available and can be purchased at the Regina Boxing Club or at the door for $10 per ticket.
