Saskatchewan boxer Joshua Ravelo becomes 2014 Canadian Junior Champion
Regina Boxing Club boxer, Joshua Ravelo is the 2014 Canadian Junior C Champion, earning a position on the Canadian Junior Team. Ravelo defeated Ontario boxer, Hunter Lee in a split decision, 2-1 in the 57kg weight category, after progressing to the final competition upon defeating Manitoba boxer, Julian Alvarez, 3-0, and Nova Scotia boxer, Tyler MacDow, 3-0. There were seven contenders in the 57kg weight category and 155 male and female junior contenders, ages 15 and 16 competed in the tournament.
“I challenged myself until I could not breathe and my arms felt like lead. I had the will to keep going knowing that in the end it was all worth the pain and making my dream a reality, and now I’m a champion,” said Ravelo.
“Joshua boxed well in the second and third rounds. He was aggressive. His opponent ran and kept his head down most of the last two rounds, making it a more difficult bout, but Joshua kept the pressure on him to win the bout,” said George Goff, Regina Boxing Club coach and Boxing Saskatchewan president.
The Ravelo family is emerging as a generation of boxing champions. Ravelo is the reigning Provincial Junior C champion (60kg) and his sister Erica is the reigning Provincial Junior C champion (50kg). She was a contender at the 2013 Canadian Golden Gloves, losing to the reigning 2012 Gold Gloves Champion. The youngest Ravelo, Gabrielle, also trains at the Regina Boxing Club and will pursue competition status when she become competitor age.
Ravelo is the third Canadian Junior C champion the Regina Boxing Club has produced since 2007. Female boxer, Tammara Thibeault earned the Canadian Junior C championship title in 2012 and male boxer, Drake Thauberger was a three time Canadian Junior C champion from 2007-2009.
This was a historical tournament for Saskatchewan’s amateur boxing community. Three Saskatchewan boxers earned medals at the 2014 Canadian Youth & Junior Championships, including Ravelo, Thomas Johnston, gold, 75kg, and Chayse Ross-Williams, bronze, 60kg.
